x-post: Folkloric Dance Show at Pennsic

This is an early notice as we're still waiting on schedule confirmation -
We're looking for performers!

Sadika al Masri and I would like to host a "Folkloric Dance Show" at Pennsic this year (in the Ampitheatre or Performing Arts Tent). Our hope is to stimulate more interest in historic representations of dance.

We're hoping that in addition to traditional Middle Eastern folkloric dances like Tunisian, Debke, Oulid Nail, Ghawazee, Tahktib, there’ll also be performers from other cultures - Japanese, Indian, Central Asian, etc.

True to the SCA ideal, a “reasonable attempt” at authentic re-creation (of garb, persona, and dance style) is expected; documentation is encouraged but not required. We WOULD like written background information on the performance so we can read it before your performance.

We're not authenticity police--modern renditions of folkloric dance is OK--we know documenting dance in period is not easy so we are relaxed about this. We're just looking for a "reasonable attempt" -

So, if you're interested in doing a performance of staged ethnic/folkloric dance from ANY non-European culture, in close approximation of SCA-period garb and style, to live OR recorded music, please contact me here or at
anthea at kawakib.com

*If you have any contact info for other cultural groups I'd appreciate it!*

Northern Oasis Hafla- Jan. 24th 09

Hey, for those of you in/near Ontario, or who like to travel, we're having our winter Northern Oasis Hafla this month, on Saturday, January 24th. A lot of our local bellydance and music community comes out, "mundane" and SCA, and we get friends from Pittsburgh and other areas coming up regularly as well. This is basically a kitchen party, ME style, at our house- we play music and dance all night, or at least until the last musician falls asleep. Northern Oasis haflas have been happening semi-regularly for about the last 12 years in various locations in and around Kitchener, hosted by Nott. So if you're missing Pennsic and looking for a chance to dance and play music with like-minded friends, come on out:-)

Original announcement below:

The Northern Oasis Hafla rides again!

Bring your instruments and your favorite hip belts or scarves, and
come over to our place to shimmy and play music all night long with
friends! We'll have tasty middle eastern snackage and our usual
homemade chai, and lots of room to dance, play music, or just lounge
and show off your jewelry:-)

When: Saturday, January 24th, 2009, beginning at 7pm
Where: Safiya & Nott's, Kitchener, Ontario (write to me if you want details/directions)

Coming from afar? Crash space available (let us know in advance, if possible- we do have several out-of-town guests coming already). Children, friends, partners welcome! Send me mail on tribe if you have questions... who knows, I might be able to answer them:)

not sure if anyone's volunteered to be coordinator for the _next_ Cure Sallee, but whoever it ends up being, I'd love to perform in the next one. I've not been able to for one reason or another for the last few, but think that next time, there should not be any reason I wouldn't be able to. It was such a great atmosphere the first time I performed in it, I'm looking forward to doing that again!

Hello Folks,

Here's some updated information for you- BTW you slackers, I posted that I was the coordinator last Fall!!!! It's only a half dozen posts down the list still! Sheeesh.

Sadly Tribal Quest was cancelled :(. So I will be there the whole time of Pennsic. I'll also be Princess, but hopefully that will be negligible.

We are on at 9:30 on Monday night in the PA tent. We will be starting right at the end of someone else, we have no downtime to set up. I sent out an email to the performers off tribe, if you didn't get it please contact me.

I would like to set up a rehearsal for us either Sunday afternoon or Monday afternoon.

Cheers!
Kamiilah

Hey ho!
This is directed toward those returnees of the Salee....
I'm the person.... um..... coordinator? This year.....
I just wanted to let you all know that it turns out I am teaching at Tribal Quest, so I really must go to it! So I will be getting to Pennsic mere hours before the Cure Salee again this year.

Do you all feel I can still coordinate? Does someone else want to, and I'll take next year? Or does someone want to be my right hand person to do whatever you have to do once we get to war?

Thanks so much to all my friends who joined me on stage last Monday! It was a great evening! We have hopefully captured it on video and will make it available to the performers (it will be up to each induvidual performer as to whether it gets distributed or put on YouTube). We had a great audience who came up to us all week telling us how much they enjoyed the show and how special it was to see such an amazing variety of music and dance all on one stage.

For those of you who don't know and wanted to dance to my Sitar at the Cure Sallee

I am sorry to say I will not be going to Pennsic this year. I just need a recoup year to recharge my batteries.

Before you send me an email trying to talk me out of it please know this:

1. This is NOT because of another person or group of people
2. I am not pregnant
3. I am not angry or sad
4. Going for only a few days will be just as stressful as going for 2 weeks (to me)
5. I am going to pre register in case I freak out and HAVE to go.
6. I will miss you all greatly
7. I plan on going next year

Hope this doesn't put too many people out.

Pennsic Class Schedule is UP!!

Posting for Master Asim... please feel free to post to your Kingdom lists and wherever else this information will be useful. Thanks!!

By the way, this year's Middle-Eastern Dance Expo has been moved to Monday, so all of you with Tuesday classes, don't panic! ;-)

Merhaba!

The initial class schedule for Pennsic University is now online! We'll be adding updates and corrections as we go, as per usual; what's online now reflects the information that will be in the Pennsic Booklet itself. Please feel free to start planning your Pennsic leaning now. :)

And if you think you'll have a couple of hours, feel free to offer to help us out at A&S Point! We're always in need of a few folks to help teachers and students have that much the better of a Pennsic.

Offers to help, Corrections, and Questions may, of course, be directed to me, Master Asim. Also feel free to pass the word about both class postings and volunteering to whatever lists or persons you see fit.

Thanks to the people who are aiding me this year, and thank you to all of you who teach and attend!

-----Asim, Pennsic Chancellor for Pennsic War XXXVI

No Hafla at Orluk Oasis at Pennsic

Hi friends!
I just wanted to put the word out, so folks will be able to plan. We won't be throwing our usual open hafla at the Orluk Oasis on the Tuesday evening of War week (August 7th). With the problems of overcrowding, road traffic, coupled with late night personality conflicts, we've decided to take the year off so we can plan how to do it better in years to come.
Thanks for your understanding, and please let others know.
Neefa bint Durr of the Orluk Oasis

Cure Sallee in history & now

hey all, I wish to take this time to express my initial vision for the Cure Sallee in the hopes it will help shape the future of this great event.

As with many of the independantly produced shows at Pennsic and elsewhere, the Cure Sallee was intended to be a professional presentation by a finite number of people with common ground. The five groups initially approached about the project were united in being
professional, Tribal Dance companies, with familiarity in working with live music, and to a broad extent , with each other.
Those first groups that I originally asked to participate in creating this annual show were Awalim, Khafif, Zafira, Blue Lotus and of course my own tribe, Baraka Mundi, along with Asim, brother to us all. Many of us have been in each other's groups, local communities, or extended families.

My motivations were partly civic and partly selfish: with so many of us having children over the past five years, it was increasingly difficult to see each other perform at War. And, I always wished I could see more than just ONE piece from my sister companies from around the Known World. I waited all year just for that 5 minutes to see how each of our companies were growing!

From this initial idea, it has evolved. Cure Sallee is always a great show, and I believe, a great gift to both the Pennsic community and to each other. Many great dancers and musicians have participated over the past few years. However, it seems to me that the initial notion of a show presented by the same group of Tribal artists working together year after year has been forgotten along the way. The name 'Cure Sallee' describes the annual coming together & cultural sharing of related nomadic tribes in North Africa. That's why we all sit on the stage together and with our children, to symbolize the history and family woven between these performing groups. It's not another dance recital, at least not to me, and was not at the outset. We do plenty of those in the mundane world.

It seems to me that the Cure Sallee has a bit of an Identity Crisis: as a direct result, we have lots of folks involved who don't know each other, confusion about who decides what, so little room onstage that we can't all really BE together as a family or safely execute our pieces, and communication/politics that get unduly complicated every year. It's certainly nobody's fault; it's just the way of things to grow, especially something as fun and successful as the Cure Sallee! Returning to the roots seems to me a good remedy.

I will continue to participate in the Cure Sallee so long as it remains an enjoyable expression of the Pennsic collaborative spirit, but I wish to advocate strongly that for 2007 we return to the formula of the original family of professional Tribal dancers, and the musicians that they wish to work with respectively, doing longer sets. I mean, can you get too much Zafira, too much live music, too many little adorable kids feeling free to celebrate with their families? And if this year is somehow stale, dull, or dreadful without the spice of other collaboraters, well, there is always 2008 to try something altogether new!

To reiterate, I say this not because we haven't had many great guest artists over the years. But I do want to see the event continue to flourish as a 'family' produced endeavor, the same as the Turku show, the Raquy show, and the worthy dance companies that have created independant events for themselves at the Performing Arts Tent. And just as the Cure Sallee is not a substitute for the Expo, but a compliment to it, I encourage everyone to continue to support these and any other NEW events that evolve in the Pennsic family. If anyone feels slighted by this, I apologize wholeheartedly. Just my 12 cents and a dash of history!

Safa of Khafif in "historical" DVD

Heya gang!

Safa of Khafif gets specific mention and a full colour picture of her beautiful self in The Gilded Serpent this month.

Shira reviews a DVD about the 1893 World Exposition and takes a strong potshot at the producers for their portrayal of women, especially dancers, in this DVD. She does, however, say nice things about Safa.

Take a gander:
http://www.gildedserpent.com/art37/ShiraWhiteCity.htm

Shira's final word: Don't get this DVD.

I just wanted to give a shout out to all the dancers, musicians, and Asim (our one-man decorating team) for making the Cure Sallee possible. I thought everyone did a wonderful job and I can't wait until next year!

However, I'd like to pass the organization of it on to someone else next year. I've agreed to be on the team of organizers for the Middle-Eastern class track at Pennsic and that's enough for me to deal with, especially being a mommy.

Cure Sallee lineup info....

This went out as an email to everyone as well. Please respond either here or there (dancers, I mean).

Actually, I don't *have* the lineup info because I don't have everyone's show info yet. I need to hear from Donnallain, Kamfa, Seabhaec, and Zimra with the following info:

* Your music choice
* Whether you're using the "house band," Baraka Mundi, or Swabere and/or Kazuki. Please make sure you've also contacted your chosen musicans with your song choices.
* Props you'll be using, if any
* Tempo of your music
* How many of you will be onstage

Dancers who have turned in your info, please double check it below and email me with any changes that need to be made or any info you're missing. If there are question marks by any of your answers, it means I'm not sure if my info is right. Please confirm. This list does not indicate the order of performances, it's just the order I have you on my notes sheet. Here is what I have so far:

Also, I won't be doing very lengthy introductions for each performer, but if you could supply me with basic info such as your location in the country and kingdom (hey, it's an SCA thing after all), that would be good. If there's anything else you think really NEEDS to be said about your performance, let me know and I'll try to fit it in.

I want to have this all done and ready to mail out by Aug 1, so the sooner you can get me the info the better. I can't guarantee I'll include those who can't get their info in as a part of this show. I hope you understand.

I've just posted this year's Cure Salee poster. Printed copies will be hung up all around Pennsic to advertise the show, as per usual. This year's flyer features color, so we'll see how that stands up to any rain (hopefully many will be posted under shelter, but that's never entirely possible).

Here's to another wonderful evening of music and dance with friends!

YIV is back! And we need waitstaff!

With all the support coming from the Pennsic fanbase, they're coming back after the fire!

I'm Jasmine aka Yasmeen, and I worked at Your Inner Vagabond last year as a waitress. Andrew and AJ have asked me to help them find a waitstaff for this coming Pennsic. So here's the info -- feel free to pass it on to anyone you think may be interested.

Your Inner Vagabond, the famously popular Turkish coffee house, is looking for people who want to wait on our wonderful customers. That means you will take orders, serve mouthwatering drinks and pastries, clear tables, auction off drinks and keep our clientele happy with quick, reliable service with a smile. You'll even get to sample some of the goods!

I love working with AJ and Andrew. They are definitely some of the laidback yet hardest working people at Pennsic. As soon as last year ended, I told them that I'd be back for more this year! The atmosphere at YIV is defintely relaxed and even at our busiest hours, we waitstaff manage to have a lot of fun.

You will listen to wonderful music while you work, and probably dance around a bit. The working conditions are pleasant, the pay is competitive. Plus, you get to work with...me! *grin*

The shop is open from late morning (around 10 or 11) to about 1am during the whole of Pennsic's run (hours are subject to change). All shifts are available, and we especially need people in the evening-to-close hours, as those are our busiest hours. If you are interested, please contact me with the days you plan to be at Pennsic and when you are available to work (afternoons, evenings, or late shift).

Email me at: Jasmine@yourinnervagabond.com if you're interested!

Can't wait to see you all this year!

*P.S. Thanks Neha for the layout =)

Okay, can I be a real meanie and say that we MUST have your performance info by June 1? I think I can!!

What I need to know is:
Song choice and/or musician choice (if you're improv'ing with a musician, indicate that as well)
General tempo of your piece... and if it changes tempo
Any props you'll be using
Mood/style of your piece
How many dancers you anticipate having onstage

I have song choices from a few of you, but not much else. In order to create a the most varietous show order, the rest of the info will be wildly useful. Please get the info to me by the end of the month.

I'll be sending an email to the same effect very soon.

Greetings all...
Here is the initial song list for dacers to pick from...
There are over 50 songs listed... there are Arabic and Turkish songs (and others) songs with different time signatures, fast songs, slow songs, veil songs, entrance songs, exit songs, cabaret songs, pennsic top songs, etc.

Keep in mind, you are also welcome to ask any musician to do a taksim (solo), drum solo. Just dance to random stuff ontop of a particular rhythm, etc. I specifically picked musicians who are familiar with playing for dancers and familiar with the music style.

These are songs we have access to sheet music for, I can also let you know who'se recording we are most basing our version off of, etc.

Here is the list...
Adio Querida
Al Ataba Ghazzaz

...I just posted a few goofy (shocking I know) pics from our recent stints at the TN Renn faire - no pics of Jen up, yet. At least you can begin to see my swelling outline. Yah that's right you all get to drink for me this year again.
PS Baraka Mundi was planning to dance to 'Purple' too - hmmm; Narah, do you have a second choice in mind?

Dancers for 2006

Hi all! Seeing Carmine post has reminded me that I should too. The organization of the dancers for Cure Sallee has been passed on to me.. so... hi.

I guess I should start with asking who wants to dance this year. We may have to make some changes, based on how many performers we end up with, but let me start with the ol' roll call.

I'll put in some of my other ideas later.. I'm way too tired right now!

[I'll try to follow this up with an email to the dancers/troupes too]

Please let me know about your preferred music for the Cure Sallee;
if you like something on the previously posted list, or want something else
altogether please let me know. I can't promise we'll be able to play *anything*
anyone asks for, but we'll try to be accomodating.

Several folks have let me know they are planning to play;
including the illustrious "Sitar-guy" Joe, Denys, and the Baraka Mundi
guys. So if you are familar with arrangements or compositions that
you've heard them play.. those could be options as well.

Just so the folks posting in other threads know: the line-up for Cure Salee 2006 is already set, both dancers and musicians. If you are interested in performing at Cure Salee 2007, feel free to talk to Christina, or come say hi sometime at Pennsic.

Dancers: Let this be a reminder that you should probably tell Christina and Jas what music you want. :)

Hi all!
How is cure sallee set up? I would like to offer my services. I do Sufi and Andalusian poetry as well as dance- spinning with double veils is a specialty. Or I would love to perform the piece from Ali Baba where Morgiana dances with the dagger and runs the thief through at the end of her dance, but let's stretch that dagger into a sword. Here is my webpage for the mundane world of dance (oh, sigh, so mundane) in case you are trying to figure out if you know me.

Dancer list and information

Hi all! I've compiled the list of dancers for Cure Sallee 2006. Unfortunately, I couldn't fit everyone into the program (we do only have two hours), but I was able to add a few new folks. I have not heard from Kamfa or Shakra. If any of you are in regular contact with him, can you please get the message to them that they need to get in touch with me PRONTO if they want to be included? Thanks.

Troupes:
Khafif
Zafira
Rockabelly
Kassar
Awalim
Baraka Mundi
Blue Lotus Tribe

Soloists:
Valizan
Narah
Asim
Samira
Donnaillain
Seabheac
Zimra
Kittarina
Atesh

Now, with so many dancers and so little time (really!!), we need to be pretty strict in imposing time limits onstage. Each troupe will have a time limit of 7 mintues and each soloist a limit of 5 mintues. Yes, I know this is live music and it's impossible to get it to the second, but Carmine and the band have agreed to keep songs within the limits and to time themselves if they are doing a drum solo or taxim. We only have two hours and lots of folks who want to dance, so please please please respect the rest of the dancers and stick to the limits (and it's not a bad thing if you come up a little short of the max time).

Carmine has already posted the list of songs here on tribe. Please have your song/taxim/whatever selected by April 1 so that the band has plenty of time to concentrate on learning the necessary music. Post your selections in THAT thread so it all stays in one place. By May 1, I'll need to know the following:

Song choice (I'll have that as I read the other thread)
Props, if any
General style/mood of dance
Number of dancers performing
Your SCA and mundane locations
Any special requests regarding your place in the show

Of course, the sooner the better on everything, but I think I've given pretty generous deadlines. I don't want to be driven crazy at the last mintue trying to come up with a show order.

Thanks everyone! I look forward to hearing from you!!

Musicians needed for Cure Sallee (Pennsic 2006)

Hello All,
This year the torch has been passed, and I am in charge of organizing the Cure Sallee house band...

This is an exciting task as I will need to assemble a large band of people who will never get a chance to practice (we live all over the place)....

For this to work, the band needs to know a bunch of bellydance standards, and have experience playing for dancers and in an ensemble. I am going to work up a list of songs, what maqams they are being played in. I an also let people know which recordings I am basing the version of the song off of. I can also maybe provide sheet music. (or try hard to :))

(if you've played this stuff before.. you know that different groups change the songs a bit...)

I'm looking for Melody players and Drummers.

Melody Players:
Need to know how to play the standards.... Arabic and Turkish songs. Musicians should also be familiar with Maqam and be able to take Taksims.

Drummers:
I'm looking for a doumbek player, a bass doumbek player and a riq player. Drummers need to be familiar with the songs (such as Aziza and Leilet Hob). Drummers should have experience playing in an ensemble (have played with an oud/kanun/etc. before)

If you are interested... please contact me:
carmine@carmine.com

I really want to work who is in the band before March.

Thanks!

I promise that when we have anything organized, we will let you know. :) Right now, we would ask that musicians who are interested in playing contact Khafif either by sending me or Melissa a private message on Tribe or by emailing Khafif at khafif@khafif.com

Don't worry everyone. When something happens, you'll be the first to know.

The Baraka Munchkins are looking forward to the Cure Sallee so much this year, since we had to miss it last time. With the addition of the lovely Blue Lotus Jen/Najla/Pandora to our crew, we are even more excited to share our kooky synergy with everybody.
It seems that this year our family of musicians has grown too, so if our personal circumstances allow, we look forward to making a nice family presence not only in dance, but in music.
It is always nice to have more awesome musicians in the Pennsic family.
In fact, even the goofy and glorious Denys just graced our hafla this weekend - we were tickled pink. If we could just get him to move to Asheville....

Thank you SO much everybody who performed and came. We are so happy to have such a wonderful event and offer the opportunity to hear such great music and see such great dancing! Pictures will be forthcoming from our end -- if anyone has some good ones, feel free to post them in this tribe's photo album, or post a link to your own website.

We are also currently working on getting the video for distribution, so performers can have a copy. We may have to limit it to one per group, due to reproduction costs and time, but everyone will get one. we're actually trying to reduce the whole show so it fits on one dvd and we don't need attractive box sets to mail it out in. :)

If performers could PM (or email) me their addresses, I will be more readily able to get you the disk when it is ready. Otherwise, thanks for a great show!

movie "Whose is this song?"

Hi all,

I just saw the movie "Whose is this song?".

It's really cool, and is a documentary/investigation by a Bulgarian woman as she tries to find the origin of a song that many people in many cities accross the Balkans claim as their own. Most of you would know the song as "Uskadara Gideriken". In her investigation she seeks out and interviews famous old singers, composers, academics, religious personalities, movie producers, and regular and roma people in Turkey, Greece, Albania, Bosnia, Serbia, and Bulgaria. I could go on and on about this move and this song.

Instead, I'll tell you about a conversation I had after watching the movie: One of the women who was watching it with me said that she loved that song as a child here in the USA. She lived in New York city and in the early 1950's Eartha Kitt made a recording of it in Turkish, and it became popular in the USA. First I've heard of that, I'll have to research this.

Choosing songs

Well, I am glad there is an interest in the sipsi and zurna, but those instruments don't play well with others. Literally and figuratively. Swabere also plays a unique instrument. He generally plays solo. I am trying to avoid a series of solo musician pieces. I don't mind a few solos here and there, but I want the musicians to play together as much as possible.

Here is our musician lineup: Melissa, Lynette, Jas, Denys, Swabere, Liam, Thomas. (Liam and Thomas aren't 100% sure they will be at Pennsic.)

Percussion: Kazuki, Safiya, Jas, and Nott. This list may not be complete....

Once again, if you have a particular song in mind we can try to accommodate but I need to know before June 5 which special song you need. We might be able to post song samples from the list, but I'm not sure if we can.

Rather than posting in the "songs" list, I thought I would just put up a notice separately. If you want to invite some other musically inclined friends to play for you, PLEASE talk to Melissa. She is coordinating music and songs. We have limited space, so it is important that we know beforehand if you are planning to invite someone for a song.

Also, at the current time, as much as we love your musicians, we're full up! Unfortunately, we can't invite people to stay for the whole show if they are performing for just your song -- we want to involve all our musicians as much as possible, of course, but our space is SO limited...

Remember, if you have a song you particularly want, or even just a rhythm or style, email Melissa (melissa_pgh@juno.com) and ask her if she can organize something for you. if you have any questions about who is playing or performing, email me or Melissa.
